Nobody with any real sense of humor *can* write a love story... . Shakespeare is the exception that proves the rule. (90-91)

About This Quote

If you think that Shakespeare wrote a love story, you’re deluded. In the very next sentence, he says that no one can write a love story. The point is, you have to have a sense of humor about this kind of thing—a sense of irony. If you see a love story as a kind of super-romantic comedy, with all the clichés and conventionally arranged plot points, then you’re going to find it funny, and if you find it funny then no one with any real sense of humor can write a love story.

You have to bring some levity to the situation. And as far as Shakespeare is concerned, no one is going to read his plays for love stories anyway.
